Consequences of DUI Conviction

Posted on:10/31/2011
A person convicted of DUI will face a lot of problems. DUI may sound simple but it is no laughing matter. It is a crime.

Like any other criminal conviction, a DUI conviction will appear on your record. Having a criminal conviction on your record can cause a lot of problems for you. Employers may be reluctant to hire you. They may fear that you will get drunk during work hours or that you may cause a drunken driving accident while on the job.

In the United States, one of the factors the judge will consider when sentencing a person convicted of a crime is the person’s record. If the person has a prior criminal conviction, the sentence will be tougher than for a first time offender. So if you have a prior DUI conviction and you are subsequently convicted of another crime, you may face enhanced penalties.

Most first and second DUI offences are misdemeanors. However if you cause bodily injury or death when driving drunk, you will be charged with felony DUI. A felony DUI is punishable with a jail term of more than one year. In many states a person convicted for a felony offense cannot own or keep a gun. In some states, you may not be allowed to vote.
